Why Face Shape Matters

A haircut that works with your face shape can help features look more balanced, and it gives you a clearer starting point when talking to your barber about what you want.
StyleScan estimates your facial proportions from the photo you provide; forehead width, cheekbone width, jaw width, and face length; and uses those ratios to suggest a closest-matching face shape, along with haircut ideas, styles to avoid, and links to UK barbershop guides.

How Our Face Shape Detector Works

StyleScan is a free browser-based tool that gives you an estimated face shape based on a photo you upload. It looks at the visible skin area of your face and estimates the relative width of your forehead, cheekbones and jaw compared with your face length. Based on those proportions, it matches you to the closest of six common face shapes and shows haircut ideas that often suit that shape.
The tool does not use facial-recognition technology, does not identify who you are, and does not send your photo anywhere; everything runs locally in your browser, and the image is discarded once you close or refresh the page.

How to Get a More Accurate Result

1

Use a front-facing photo taken straight-on, not at an angle.

2

Pull hair away from your forehead and hairline where possible; a fringe or long hair covering the sides of your face can affect the estimate.

3

Use even, natural lighting. Strong shadows on one side of the face can throw off the width measurements.

4

Keep a neutral expression and remove sunglasses or anything covering your jaw or cheeks.

5

If your result looks off, try a second photo from a slightly different distance; this is an estimate, not a diagnosis, so results can vary between photos.

Men's Face Shapes and Haircut Ideas

Each face shape below has haircut directions that often work well, based on general barbering guidance rather than a fixed rule for everyone.

Oval

Considered the most versatile shape; most fades and top lengths tend to work without much adjustment.

Round

Added height on top and slightly tighter sides can help create a longer appearance.

Square

Texture and movement on top can soften a strong, angular jawline.

Heart

Styles that draw the eye downward can help balance a wider forehead and narrower chin.

Diamond

Extra width near the forehead and chin can help balance prominent cheekbones.

Oblong

Width at the sides tends to help more than extra height on top, which can lengthen the face further.

Face Shape Is Only Part of the Picture

Face shape is a useful starting point, but it's not the only thing that decides which haircut will work for you. Hair type and density change how a style actually sits; thick, curly or coily hair behaves very differently from fine, straight hair, even on the same face shape. Your current hairline, how much length you're growing out from, and how much daily styling time you're willing to put in all matter too. That's why the recommendations below are a starting point for a conversation with your barber, not a fixed instruction.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is the face shape detector?

StyleScan gives an estimate based on the proportions it can measure from your photo, not a clinical or biometric measurement. Photo angle, lighting, hairstyle and hair covering your forehead or jaw can all affect the result, so treat it as a helpful starting point rather than a definitive answer.

Does StyleScan store or upload my photo?

No. The photo is processed entirely in your browser and is not sent to any server. It's discarded when you close or refresh the page.

Can my face shape change over time?

The underlying bone structure doesn't change much in adulthood, but visible proportions can shift slightly with weight changes, facial hair, or hairstyle, which is part of why results can vary between photos.

What if my result seems wrong?

Try a clearer, front-facing photo with hair away from your forehead and even lighting. If two attempts give different shapes, you likely sit between two categories; common for many people; and a barber can help refine that in person.

Does hair type affect the haircut recommendation?

Yes. Face shape suggests a general direction, but curly, coily, straight and wavy hair all hold a style differently. Check the linked guides for texture-specific guidance alongside your face shape result.

Is this the same as a professional consultation?

No. StyleScan is a grooming guidance tool to help you walk into a barbershop with a clearer starting point; it isn't a substitute for an in-person consultation with a barber.
